Final Post Week 13: Assessment

One of the most enjoyable and frustrating things that we have had to do this semester is create an iweb website. I wasn't aware at how easy it was to create a basic webpage and with the knowledge of customizing templates from previous workshops it was rather enjoyable. However there was some issues getting the hang of it and understanding the necessity of the domain, however I'm pretty happy with how it turned out and confident that I can do it again.

RSS is still a little bit confusing to me, however I have become aware of it and know it is an easy way to keep track of updates of the subscribed site.

Before this lesson I wasn't aware of sites such as Flickr or delicious, I found that both site are helpful with university work and are easy to use. I have used Flickr more than once in my vfx course. Exploring Google was rather interesting, seeing that I use it the majority of the time that I am on the internet it was worth knowing what else I could do with It and how it to benefit me in the future.

Starting a blog was something that never crossed my mind until this course. Even back in the day when I used myspace and people where blogging here and there it didn't really interest me. (However on myspace blogs are usually stupid rants anyways) however keeping a journal and summarizing every workshop using our blog has been tedious, but also a helpful way to fully understand the days’ work. Also when we started to learn about templates and customized our blogs was it fun, we could change the fonts, backgrounds, colours add videos, music and games but also it taught us the basics of HTML CSS subscriptions and feeds.

Technorati was the last workshop that we had to do, however it seemed to fail the first, second and third attempt at using it. In the end it finally worked and accepted my claim and I was able to add a tag in my blog. Overall it was quite frustrating.

I have enjoyed this semester and have found it challenging but interesting no the less. It has opened my eyes to how the Internet actually functions and the networks that are included and hopefully it will benefit me in the future.

See you next semester!!! :D

FTP and Athene

FTP or Flie Transfer Protocol is a standard network protocol used to exchange and manipulate files over an internet protocol computer network such as the internet.

It is built on a client- server structure and uses separate control and data connections between the client and server applications.

It's purpose is to promote sharing of files (computer programs and/or data)
To transfer data reliably and efficiently
To encourage indirect or implicit use of remote computers
To shield a user from variations in file storage systems among different hosts.

FTP commands and transferred files can be captured using a packet sniffer, if on the same network. This is a problem to many Internet protocol specifications written prior to the creation of SSL, SMTP and Telnet. The solution to this problem is to used either SFTP (SHH File transfer Protocol) or FTPS which adds a SSL or TLS encryptions to FTP protocol.

Technorati "grrr"

is annoying and confusing and not working or claiming so i can't check my authority or rank
Essentially Technorati is the leading monitor of the world of weblogs. It uses and contributes to open source software. Technorati looks at tags that authors have placed on their websites. These tags help categorize search results, with recent results coming first. It ranks blogs and gives them a number which it calls authority. Authority is determined by the number of time you have been linked to in other people's blog. So to build your authority, encourage bloggers to link to your blog and to ping Technorati.
ok here is a link to bridget's post!! i just gave her authority

ok! ttfn people!!!

Counters and RSS

a) Counters

A nifty little device that shows you whether your popular or not by displaying how many people have visited your page...great for a boost to the self esteem....

b) RSS

RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is web feed formats used to publish frequent updates such as blogs, news headlines audio and video.RSS allows subscribed followers to receive update without having to physically go to these sites for updates. When you subscribe to a feed.

Google Reader is capable of RSS feeds online or offline. It monitors fellow users and keeps track of all updates. It can be accessed offline through Google Gears, a browser extension that lets online applications work offline. Updates can also be received through a mobile i.e at iPhone users.

Revision

Thus far in MPI104 we have covered Google, Blogger, Flickr, del.icio.us and templates and HTML.

In the first week we were introduced to the subject and read through the subject outline, we also applied for athene account.

The second week we looked closely at Google and its many functions. We discovered that Google had other accessories besides the specific search engines and all applied for a Gmail account. With a Gmail account we were introduced to its functions too, such the calendar (which we subscribed to 'something of interest' from its gallery) and Google doc.

In the third week we made a blog account on blogger (or blogspot) and have been continuously posting blogs ever since. Here is my post on Templates and CSS and on Flickr. We also learnt a little HTML so that we were able put a link from our blog post onto the MPI104 blog Week 3 post. In total I have posted 5 blogs and commented others as well, this is one of my more interesting ones. During week 6 we learnt how to change fonts and templates and applied this to our blogs such as changing the font and its colour and alter the colour of the font in my blog.

The fourth we were introduced to Flickr. We created an account and uploaded pictures. We also faved pictures from our classmate’s Flickr accounts and comment on theirs. I have a total of 29 pictures. I found Flickr useful to upload my VFX 101 W.I.P. Here are some 3 of my favourite images, 1, 2, and 3.

In week five we looked at Del.icio.us, home of the bookmarks. We created an account and add bookmarks of some of our favourite WebPages and classmates accounts. In total I have 39 bookmarks; however three favourites of mine are Deviant art, facebook and Youtube.

Deviant ART is where I spend my majority of internet surfing time on. It’s a interactive online gallery where you can post up your work and have other people favour and comment it and vice versa. It’s really opened up my eyes to different styles and techniques of art and design.

Facebook is a fast easy way to keep in contact with friends and family, see pictures and keep up with events, birthdays and news.

Youtube is extremely handy when wanting to listen and watch nearly anything for free!! Keeps me occupied.

In the sixth week we were introduced to cascading style sheets and templates. After reading up on them and discussing their usefulness we used our knowledge to alter our blogs with HTML.

Templates and CSS

If familiar with the layout, I can see how CSS is the number one application to style web pages using HTML. You can adjust almost everything from colour to font to positions of borders and just generally the entire layout of your page.
My understanding of templates ( and correct me if i'm wrong) is that they are already premade and stylized so that all you have to do is pick a layout or colour instead of manually doing it through html. The advantage of this (for me and other thats aren't too keen abusing css) is that its simple to use, however the disadvantage is the limited choices it has.
Using both CSS and templates, I altered my blog's font, colour, borders and size. Depending on where I felt confident enough to change my page using CSS I did, however I still very much lean towards the templates.
I also found that accessibility in a web page is subtle but effective. Such as larger font and bolder colours for the visually impaired, or audio for the hearing impaired.

I find CSS challenging, however would like to become more familiar with it!
good day!
